Youth Physical Fitness Program (YPF)

The Marine Corps League’s Youth Physical Fitness program is funded by the U. S. Marines Youth Foundation which was incorporated in 1967 to endow the Youth Physical Fitness (YPF) program and others like it benefiting American Youth. Without the generous support of the Foundation, the program would not exist. Under the leadership of its Board of Directors, the future is bright as we expect the YPF Program to continue to grow.
The Youth Physical Fitness program continues to impact youth across the United States. The National Youth Physical Fitness Program encompasses students from elementary school through junior and senior high school. The program is designed to complement, not replace, the existing curriculum and to be easily implemented in any school situation. Students are tested in five basic exercises and are awarded scores indicative of their general fitness level. Students can earn one beautiful full-color certificate for each year of participation. JROTC Cadets from all branches have the potential to earn the JROTC YPF Ribbon if they meet the scoring criteria found in the section above.
Young Marines of the Marine Corps League
The Young Marines is a national non-profit 501c (3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, aged eight through high school graduation. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral and physical development of its members. The program focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork and self-discipline, so its members can live and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
The Young Marines strengthens the lives of America’s youth by teaching the importance of self-confidence, academic achievement, honoring our veterans, good citizenship, community service, and living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building and leadership and promotes a lifestyle that is conducive to being productive members of society.
Young Marine’s Marine Corps League Commendation Ribbon Unit (#1502) – Awarded to a Young Marine unit, regiment, or division for outstanding performance of duty to the community over an extended period of time, or for any single act when the Unit has performed under great competition with other units or organizations. Marine Corps League Detachment, Department, Division, or National Commandant can submit a short letter to the Young Marines’ National Executive Director (Col Bill Davis) nominating a Young Marines group (unit, regiment, division) for the award. In 1959 in Waterbury, Connecticut, several Marine Corps League members formed an organization for boys that would mirror the values of the Marine Corps. Their vision – to offer leadership training and other life skills – formed the bedrock of the organization known today as the Young Marines. Years later, the program is a highly respected youth organization, for boys and girls age eight through high school graduation, that has grown to over 235 units. The focus, though, has remained the same: to strengthen the lives of America’s youth by teaching the importance of self-confidence, academic achievement, honoring our veterans, good citizenship, community service, and living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Scouting
| Eagle Scout Good Citizenship Award The Marine Corps League considers it an Honor and Privilege to recognize America’s future leaders for earning the Scouts of America Eagle Scout Award by presenting them the Marine Corps League’s “Good Citizenship Award” Certificate and to have the Eagle Scout become aware of the skills that they have mastered to become an Eagle Scout are also held in very high regards by the Marine Corps League and Corporations throughout the United States. |

The award is a gold and purple square knot, which may be worn only on the Scout uniform. A congratulatory letter from the Marine Corps League National Boy Scout Committee Chair is included as recognition for this award. Department or Detachment Commandants may recognize Marine Corps League members who earn this award as they deem appropriate.
The Community Organization Award is designed to recognize Marine Corps League members who are actively involved in the Scouting program. This award is not meant to be a selective or limited award, but one that is available to any Marine Corps League member who completes the requirements for the award. The award is meant to recognize the dedication and work required by a Marine Corps League member to assist in furthering the Scouting program in the Marine Corps League.
Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC)
| The Marine Corps League is a supporter of the JROTC programs throughout the United States. The Marine Corps League has two ribbons that can be presented to JROTC Cadets: The Marine Corps League Community Service Ribbon This award may be used to recognize exemplary service above and beyond the service activities performed by the unit of which the cadet(s) is/are a member; or has held a key leadership position and/or directly contributed to the planning, coordination, and implementation of high-profile community service/volunteer project(s). SELECTION: This award will be presented to any qualifying cadet(s) on an annual basis. The Senior Instructor will determine eligibility. SPONSOR: Marine Corps League by National, Division, Department, or Detachment Commandant or Authorized Representative, By Direction of same. PRESENTATION: Presented per local policy. RIBBON: MCL ribbon number M-4-9. Ribbon is green, yellow, green. Multiple award device eligible within each JROTC program to denote second, third and fourth award respectively. |
The second ribbon is the Marine Corps League Youth Physical Fitness Award.
CRITERIA: Awarded to any cadet who scores 350 or more points on the Marine Corps League Youth Physical Fitness test.
SELECTION: This award will be presented to any qualifying cadet on an annual basis. The Senior Instructor will determine eligibility.
SPONSOR: Marine Corps League by National, Division, Department, or Detachment Commandant or Authorized Representative, By Direction of same.
PRESENTATION: Presented per local policy.
RIBBON: Vanguard Ribbon 5-2-1-2. Ribbon is red, yellow, white, blue, white, yellow, red. Multiple award device eligible within each JROTC program to denote second, third and fourth award respectively.
Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) is a program sponsored by the United States Armed Forces in high schools and some middle schools across the United States and US military bases abroad. The program was originally created as part of the National Defense Act of 1916 and later expanded under the 1964 ROTC Vitalization Act.
According to Title 10, Section 2031 of the United States Code, the purpose of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps is “to instill in students in [the United States] secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, and personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.” Additional objectives are established by the service departments of the Department of Defense. Under 542.4 of Title 32 (National Defense) of the Code of Federal Regulations declares the objectives.
Scholarships
| PURPOSE: Provide Scholarship Grants to qualified applicants who are pursuing an undergraduate degree, and will be enrolled as a full-time student (12 semester hour minimum) in the upcoming academic year 2024 Fall Semester and is attending an accredited undergraduate institution. Scholarships may be awarded for a maximum of four (4) years. (These Grants do not have to be in consecutive years). |
